I was skeptical when I first heard about Times Tales from The Trigger Memory Co. So, when I had the opportunity to review their product last month, I knew that I needed to see for myself if their claims really are true!
Times Tales is an interactive and animated two part DVD that teaches children and adults their upper times tables in ONE Hour! I received the DVD digital download which was very easy to download unto my computer. It also came with three pdf files for their workbook packets.
The packets include tests, crossword puzzles, flashcards and cube games. In the picture below you can see the cube games and crossword puzzle for Part 1.
Let me tell you a more about the lessons themselves. There is no fluff with these videos, they get right to the point of teaching multiplication, yet it is done is an ingenious way! The videos are VERY interactive and engaging. Each part is 30 min in length, and although they are packing in a lot of information, it holds the attention of a young child the entire time.
Each part is broken up into six steps.
Step 1: Meet the Characters
This is where the Times Tales story begins to come alive. You are introduced to the number characters. For example, number 3 is butterfly and number 8 is Mrs. Snowman. The numbers themselves morph into their characters on screen.
Step 2: Learn the Stories
This is the most important part of the entire program. Each number character has a story, the story is played out in a fun and engaging way. My favorite story is one about the 6th grade class, “The 6th grade class raised butterflies. At 1 o’clock they set 8 butterflies free”
Did you catch that?
It took me a little bit to realize what the purpose of the stories were, yet then I saw it! Each story is a multiplication problem. For the above story the 6th grade class represents the number 6, and butterflies represents the number 3.
Because at 1’oclock they set 8 butterflies free…
Each story uses clever and catchy memory triggers to help you learn your multiplication facts.
Step 3: Story Quiz
This step helps reinforce the stories in a fun way. It’s basically a few minutes of practice with a game show theme.
Step 4: You’re the Storyteller
In this section, a few more minutes are spent making sure that the stories remembered.
Step 5: Practice Flashcards
This part begins reinforcing the times tables learned by using flashcards on screen. The first set of flashcards use the number characters to help you remember the story, they then switch and begin practicing without the character clues.
Step 6: Flashcards & Practice Pages
The last step is to use all the resources that came in your PDF packet to practice and reinforce the multiplication tables that were taught. Times Tales advises that you practice for one week before moving on to Part 2.
Did It Work?
It absolutely did! I was quite beside myself how quickly my 7 year old daughter, with no prior knowledge of multiplication, picked up and learned her multiplication tables. Two hours after learning them for the first time, Daddy was able to quiz her when he got home from work and she had remembered them all!
He was very impressed! and so am I.
What makes Times Tales work is the creativity of each characters story. They are just easy to remember, then with consistent practice using the flashcards and cube game one gets faster and faster at reciting the multiplication tables.
And that my friends is how you can learn your multiplication tables in ONE hour!
I can only imagine others on The Schoolhouse Review Crew have been as excited as we have with Times Tales from The Trigger Memory Co. Go check out their reviews!
