Have you ever arrived at January 1st and wondered how the Christmas season slipped past?
We’re on a mission this holiday season to slow down, savor the season and spend time in God’s Word. We don’t want to arrive at the new year feeling like we missed the reason for the season.
The advent season begins this Sunday, November 27th. Advent, or “the arrival” is usually a time that we reflect on the birth of Jesus.
Just like a mother before birthing her child enters a season of nesting, advent is a time to remember why we celebrate Christmas.
We have taken the same simple message found in our DECLARE bible study and bring it into your Christmas season. We have gathered twenty-eight scripture passages and bundled them into an Advent Devotional.
Join us as we spend the next four weeks immersing our hearts and minds into the story of Jesus’ birth as told through scripture.
The process is simple. Your eBook contains one page per day with a scripture at the top of the page that you can print out. Under the scripture are lines provided for you to copy that verse out in your own handwriting. You can get as creative as you want with colors, fonts, and accents. We are excited about using these materials with our children. The younger ones may draw on a blank piece of paper while the older ones copy the scripture with mom while they talk about the unveiling of the story each day.
Enjoy meditating on each word as you write out the scripture passage. When writing is complete, we encourage you to speak the words out loud, savoring the hearing of God’s word that brings life. Pause briefly to allow your spirit to respond to Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Like Mary, treasure these things and ponder them in your heart. You may want to respond by singing a favorite Christmas carol or other song with your family.
Let the Christmas story come to life as you explore word-by-word the unfolding of the story of redemption. We love how Sally Lloyd Jones expresses the excitement of God’s story in her introduction to the inspiring Jesus Storybook Bible:
“There are lots of stories in the Bible, but all the stories are telling one Big Story. The Story of how God loves his children and comes to rescue them.
It takes the whole Bible to tell this Story. And at the center of the Story, there is a baby. Every story in the Bible whispers his name. He is like the missing piece in the puzzle–the piece that makes all the other pieces fit together, and suddenly you can see a beautiful picture.”(Zondervan, 2007)
